Universal Studios Japan is a great day — but the ticket price isn't a fixed number, and the Express Pass can quietly double your spend. Both are "money choices" you can score before you buy, and the biggest lever is simply which date you go.
USJ prices the 1-Day Studio Pass by demand, so it changes day to day. As a rough 2026 guide, an adult pass ranges from about ¥8,600 on quiet early-week/low-season days up to ¥11,900 on peaks like Silver Week (mid-to-late September), most October weekends, and the Halloween period. Same rides, same park — the number is set by the calendar.

The Universal Express Pass lets you skip the queue on selected rides, and it's a separate purchase from about ¥10,800 that does not include park entry. So a crowded-day visit with an Express Pass can cost ¥11,900 + ¥10,800 ≈ ¥22,000+ per person. It's genuinely worth it if you're visiting on a busy day, have limited time, and must ride the headline attractions (Nintendo World, etc.). On a quiet weekday with short queues, it's often money you don't need to spend — the free timed-entry/area tickets can be enough.
Pick the date first — it's the biggest, easiest save (¥3,000+). Go on a quiet weekday if you can, buy the dated ticket online in advance (cheaper stress, no ticket-booth line), and only add the ~¥10,800 Express Pass when you're going on a crowded day and can't afford to queue. Don't reflexively buy Express "to be safe" on a quiet day — check the expected crowd level, then decide. The park is the fun; the pricing is just math.
