Osaka to Kyoto: the ¥410 train the JR won't tell you about
🚃 For anyone hopping between Osaka and Kyoto who assumes JR is the only (or cheapest) way.
⏱ 30-second answer
- The JR Special Rapid is fast (~29 min) but ¥580. The private Hankyu line is ¥410 — ¥170 cheaper — and drops you in central Kyoto (Kawaramachi), near Gion and Nishiki, not out at Kyoto Station.
- No express surcharge on Hankyu: the Limited Express is the same ¥410 as a local, ~43–48 min. Keihan (Yodoyabashi → Sanjo) is ¥490, also central.
- So unless you have a JR Pass (then JR is "free") or you're starting/ending at Kyoto Station, the Hankyu is cheaper and often more convenient for sightseeing. JR Pass math →
Guidebooks default to "take the JR" between Osaka and Kyoto — and it's fine — but it's neither the cheapest option nor always the most convenient. Kansai has three competing railways on this route, and the private lines undercut JR while dropping you closer to the tourist heart of Kyoto.
The three trains, compared
| Line | Route | Time | Fare |
| Hankyu (cheapest) | Osaka-Umeda → Kyoto-Kawaramachi | ~43–48 min | ¥410 |
| Keihan | Yodoyabashi → Sanjo | ~50 min | ¥490 |
| JR Special Rapid | Osaka Sta. → Kyoto Sta. | ~29 min | ¥580 |
Fares as published for 2026 — confirm on the day. Hankyu charges no limited-express surcharge, so its fastest train is the same ¥410. JR is the quickest and is covered by the Japan Rail Pass; the private lines are not.
JR ¥580 − Hankyu ¥410 = ¥170 saved each wayPlus Hankyu/Keihan drop you in central Kyoto (Kawaramachi/Sanjo), saving a further bus or subway hop from Kyoto Station.
When JR still wins
Take JR if: you hold a Japan Rail Pass (the ride is already paid for); you're starting or ending at Kyoto Station (Shinkansen connection, or a hotel there); or you simply want the fastest trip (~29 min). Otherwise, for a sightseeing day heading to Gion, Kawaramachi or Nishiki Market, the Hankyu at ¥410 is both cheaper and closer.
Mio's verdict
Default to the Hankyu (¥410) for Osaka↔Kyoto sightseeing — it's cheaper than JR and lands you in the middle of things. Use JR only when a rail pass makes it free or Kyoto Station is your actual start/end. "Take the JR" is a habit, not a calculation; the ¥170 (each way, per person) adds up across a trip. Check which station you actually want to be at, then pick the line.
