Tokyo has TWO teamLabs — book the right one (and don't get shut out)
🎨 For anyone adding teamLab to a Tokyo trip and assuming there's one, and that you can just turn up.
⏱ 30-second answer
- There are two different teamLab museums in Tokyo — Planets (Toyosu): barefoot, knee-deep water, one fixed route; and Borderless (Azabudai): dry, no map, you wander. They are not the same show.
- Adult tickets run about ¥3,800 on weekdays up to roughly ¥4,200 on peak days — both use date-based dynamic pricing, so a weekday slot is cheaper.
- Both are timed-entry and regularly sell out — there's no walking up to the door. Book a slot in advance. First time? Planets (the physical, water immersion) — and note it's scheduled to close end of 2027. More Tokyo money math →
"Let's do teamLab in Tokyo" hides two traps: there are actually two teamLab museums that are completely different experiences, and both sell timed tickets that run out. Turn up on the day without a booking and you'll likely be turned away. Here's how to pick the right one and pay the lower price.
Two different teamLabs — pick on purpose
| teamLab Planets (Toyosu) | teamLab Borderless (Azabudai) |
| Experience | Barefoot, water, one route | Dry, no map, you wander |
| Time inside | ~75–90 min | open-ended |
| Note | closes end of 2027 | reopened 2024, permanent |
| Adult ticket | ~¥3,800+ (dynamic) | ~¥3,800–4,200 (dynamic) |
Planets is the "sink into the art" one — you roll up your trousers and walk through knee-deep water; wear/bring shorts or easily-rolled trousers. Borderless is a wander-and-get-lost maze with no set path. Different vibe, similar price.
Both sell out — and weekdays are cheaper
Neither is a turn-up attraction: entry is by timed slot and popular dates sell out days ahead. Because pricing is date-based, a weekday slot is typically ¥300–400 cheaper than a weekend one and also less crowded — a double win. Book the exact date/time online in advance; don't count on same-day tickets, especially on weekends, holidays and cherry-blossom season.
Same museum, cheaper day: weekday ~¥3,800 vs weekend ~¥4,200Dynamic pricing means the day you pick sets the price. A weekday visit saves money AND avoids the worst crowds — book that slot.
Mio's verdict
If you only do one and it's your first time, choose Planets (Toyosu) — the barefoot, water immersion is the stronger physical experience, and it's on a clock (closing end of 2027). Book a weekday timed slot in advance to pay the lower dynamic price and skip the sold-out risk. Doing both? They're different enough to justify it, but that's ~¥7,600+ of your Tokyo budget — decide if the second one earns it.
