"Let's see the snow monkeys" sounds like an easy Tokyo add-on. It isn't. The famous bathing macaques live at Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano — and while the ¥800 entry is almost a rounding error, the time and transport are the real cost. Here's the honest math on doing it from Tokyo versus from Nagano, and which ticket actually saves you money.
The gate price is tiny. What you're really buying is distance: Tokyo → Nagano is about 90 minutes on the Hokuriku Shinkansen (roughly ¥8,000 each way reserved), then a bus of ~45 minutes to the trailhead, then a ~30-minute, 1.6 km walk uphill to the monkeys — each way. Round-trip that's a full ~12-hour day out of your trip.
| From Tokyo (DIY), 1 adult | Cost |
|---|---|
| Shinkansen round trip (Tokyo⇄Nagano, reserved) | ~¥16,000 |
| Snow Monkey Express Bus Pass (Nagano⇄park + entry) | ¥6,800 |
| Total | ~¥22,800 · ~12 hrs |
The Express Bus Pass (¥6,800) already includes park admission and the direct round-trip bus from Nagano Station, so you don't pay the ¥800 gate again. Book the Shinkansen separately.
If you're overnighting in or near Nagano (or on a Hokuriku route anyway), the trip stops being a marathon. The Snow Monkey Pass (¥5,100 adult) covers unlimited one-day Nagaden Railway travel + the local round-trip bus between Yudanaka and the park + one park admission. Buying each leg separately usually costs more and is fiddlier — the pass is both cheaper and simpler.
| Option | What's covered | Adult |
|---|---|---|
| Snow Monkey Pass | Nagaden train + local bus + entry | ¥5,100 |
| Express Bus Pass | Direct Nagano⇄park bus + entry | ¥6,800 |
| Entry only (at gate) | Park admission alone | ¥800 |
Guided round-trip tours from Tokyo or Nagano bundle the transport, the walk-in, and a guide into one booking. They cost more than DIY, but they remove the connections, the timing risk, and — increasingly important — they usually secure your dated entry for you. If you're not comfortable chaining Shinkansen → bus → snowy walk on a tight winter timetable, a tour can be worth the premium; if you are, DIY from Nagano is cheaper. Compare the tour's total price against ¥5,100 (from Nagano) or ~¥22,800 (from Tokyo) before you book.
From August 2026, Jigokudani sells dated online tickets up to 3 months ahead, and on busy days these take priority — visitors without one may be turned away. Winter weekends and holidays (peak snow-monkey season) are exactly when this bites. If your trip depends on seeing them, reserve the dated entry in advance, especially for December–February.
Don't treat this as a casual Tokyo half-day. From Tokyo it's a committed ~12-hour, ~¥22,800 day — only worth it if seeing the monkeys is genuinely a highlight for you. The smart play is to fold it into a Nagano/Hokuriku stop and buy the ¥5,100 Snow Monkey Pass, which bundles train, bus and entry and cuts the cost roughly four-fold. Either way, book the dated entry ahead for winter so you're not turned away at the gate.
