The trap is the headline flight fare. A ¥3,990 Tokyo–Osaka ticket looks unbeatable next to a ¥14,700 train — until you add a checked bag and the two airport journeys, and notice you've spent longer getting there. Mio doesn't compare gate-to-gate; Mio compares your front door to your hotel door. Here's the honest math.
The Shinkansen leaves from a central station (Tokyo / Shinagawa → Shin-Osaka, which is on the Osaka Metro) with essentially no check-in and generous free luggage. A budget flight adds four hidden costs:
• Airport transfer at both ends. Getting to a Tokyo airport and from Kansai/Itami into central Osaka typically runs a few thousand yen and 40–90 minutes each way. Kansai (KIX) → Namba on the Nankai line is ~44 min and cheap; a Tokyo-side transfer (bus/Skyliner/N'EX) adds ¥1,500–3,300.
• Checked-bag fee. LCCs charge per checked bag — on Peach a checked bag is an add-on (buy it online in advance; airport prices are higher).
• Time buffer. Arrive early, board, taxi, wait for bags. That erases the "faster in the air" advantage on short hops.
• Rigidity. The cheapest LCC fares are non-refundable / hard to change.
Walk-up Nozomi reserved from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka is around ¥14,700. But if you book ahead through Smart-EX (free, English app/site) or paid EX Reservation, you unlock early-bird "Hayatoku" fares — booking ~21 days out can bring Tokyo–Shin-Osaka down to roughly ¥12,000–12,400. That single step closes most of the gap to a bag-carrying flight.
City-centre to city-centre, the Nozomi is about 2h30m with no meaningful check-in. To beat it on cost, a flight needs a rock-bottom fare and you carrying only a cabin bag (to skip the checked-bag fee). Add one checked bag plus transfers and the flight is usually slower and no cheaper. Choose the flight only when the fare is exceptional and you're travelling light.
Here distance flips the verdict. The Nozomi to Hakata is roughly 5 hours and around ¥23,000 reserved. A flight is only ~2 hours in the air, so even after transfers and a bag you typically save 2+ hours — and LCC fares can beat the train price. For this route, fly unless you specifically want the scenery or a rail pass already covers it.
